A Nonsense in the design caused hundreads homeless

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Torrential rains and flooding ravaged large areas of eastern and southern India on Saturday, October 3rd, with troops airlifting supplies and evacuating thousands of people to higher ground. In Andhra Pradesh and karnataka the death toll raised to 172, the worst effected areas are Kurnool distrit and parts of Karnataka.

Along with a few like minded people, we are arranging a Flood Relief Camp near Mantralayam, Andhra Pradesh which is one of the worst affected areas in this region. The camp includes free medical check up, free distribution of medicines, clothes, essentials, food grains (rice etc) for the benefit of the affected.

We are leaving on Oct 16, 2009 from Bangalore and would start back from the camp on Oct 18, 2009 and will reach on Monday i.e. Oct 19, 2009 to Bangalore.

You can support the cause by your contribution in any of the following manner:

  1. Money by self
  2. Collect money from kin and kith and support the cause
  3. If you know someone in Bangalore and can support the cause then, you can request them to send any of the following latest by Thursday i.e. Oct 15, 2009:
    1. Clothes
    2. Warm wear like sweaters etc
    3. Foot wear
    4. Kitchen ware like utensils, spoons, plates, tumblers, bottles etc
    5. Blankets
    6. Rice, grains etc
    7. Anything else useful to the affected
  4. You or anyone else in your kin and kith interested can be a volunteer in the camp.

An update from my friend

Hi All,

We distributed the following items to 96 families in “Inam Budhihala Village” on Oct 17, 2009. A total of 6 volunteers have been to the village to make this activity successful. We distributed to other 14 families on the way to this village. Appreciate one and all for all their support for this cause.

The following items were distributed in the village per family:

1. Rice: 3 Kg

2. Atta (powdered wheat): 1 Kg

3. Cooking Oil (Sunflower Oil): 1 Kg

4. Biscuit Packs (Parle – G): 2 No.

5. Bread/ Buns: 2 per every kid

6. Table Salt: ½ Kg

7. Bathing Soap (Lifebouy): 1 No.

8. Utensils: Till stock lasted

9. Toys: Till stock lasted

Special thanks to Mrs. Kanchan Deshpande, Mr. Mahesh (AOL), Mr. Ujwal Sakri (AOL), Mr. Deshuman, Mrs. Usha and Mr. Raghavendra without whom the event wouldn’t have been successful.

Our observations/ convesations from the villagers:

1. No government, political party has reached for their rescue yet.

2. Only Art of Living (AOL) has been supporting them since floods recided.

3. Out of 96 families 2 families had only kids as survivors. One family has 8 year boy as the oldest survivor with 4 more siblings.
Another family has 7 year old girl as the oldest survivor with 2 more siblings surviving.

4. Few miles of fields were damaged by the floods. We were tired of looking at spoiled fields on the way.

5. Water is contaminated in all these villages. And waterborne diseases are spreading fast.

6. People are still busy removing debris from fields and houses (if any remained and could be repaired)

7. Un explainable loss of cattle which is the only living for some families in the villages.

8. People are still in trauma and are expecting support to start their living instead of distributions like what we have done in this activity.
